Rubber compound: magic at the molecular level
The key to the success of any winter tire is the composition of the rubber compound. It must remain elastic even in severe frost to ensure a reliable grip on the road. The new Continental models use Cool Chili technology, which includes a high silica content. This allows the tire to literally "stick" to wet and cold roads, significantly reducing the braking distance. In addition, special resins and polymers are added to the composition, which improve grip on snow and ice, preventing the tread from "tanning".
Tread pattern: Smart geometry
Just cutting deep grooves in the tire is no longer enough. The tread pattern of modern Continental tires is the result of sophisticated computer simulations. The V-shaped directional pattern with multiple slats (small slots) effectively removes water and snow from the contact spot, preventing aquaplaning and slashplaning. The new models use slats of different shapes and depths. Some work like micro-pumps, absorbing the water film from the ice, while others cling to the snow like claws.
Spikes or "Velcro": an eternal dispute in a new version
Continental continues to improve both types of winter tires. A new spike attachment technology has been developed for studded models, which prevents them from falling out and reduces noise when driving on asphalt. The spikes themselves have also changed: They have become lighter, and their shape has been optimized for maximum grip on ice. At the same time, studless tires ("Velcro") are becoming more and more effective.
